Lino Prints

These images represent a purely experimental stage, with trials in colour, with different papers, and subject types and sizes. Each has both its own merits and its faults. I have worked towards producing crisp, clear images, with a good tonal balance between layers. As the layers are built up by a method of reduction, there is no “going back”, and mistakes at an earlier stage are unalterable. In many cases I have found that the initial layer was too light (Canal lock No.5 for example) and that the last layer is too dark in comparison (Edale Road, Hope).

As each print improves over that before it, steps backward are always difficult to overcome. I have found that patience, practice and perseverance are the only ways forward. Having spent some considerable time in this initial trial stage, I am currently planning a set of new images, which will be in minimum editions of six. Subjects covered will include landscapes as an accompaniment to my paintings, and more abstract designs based on religious architecture.
